A DJ creates an atmosphere and makes people go crazy on the dance floor – "I know I have done well when I hear the crowd screaming all the way to the DJ booth."
Matti Kiuru, who joined PAM recently, wants to share the joy of music with others. He feels it is important to be a member of your own sector's union.
I am Matti Kiuru, 30 years old.
I live in Joensuu.
I joined PAM 2.3.2019.
I work as a full-time DJ at Guru Entertainment & Security Oy. Every month I do an average of 15 to 20 gigs at different locations. Besides gigs in Joensuu, I work in towns such as Mikkeli, Lappeenranta and Kitee. My working hours are usually between 22 pm. and 4 am.
My work is also my passion. Music has been close to my heart since I was a kid and now I am in my dream job. My work has never actually felt as work, because I used to do quite a lot of gigs before in my spare time in various parties and occasions. Now when my hobby has turned into my job, I could not even think of a better situation for myself.
As a DJ you need foremost confidence. You can be hit with surprising situations, for instance face technical problems, whereas you need to take control of the situation. A part from that, you need a broad knowledge of music genres and an understanding of your crowd. As a DJ you mainly offer service, wheras the crowd need to be taken into consideration and you need to play music for all ears.
My work shift starts in the evening at 9 after a cup of coffee and by preparing the DJ booth. At the same time, I plan the music according to the theme for the evening, the place and the crowd. Every evening is slightly different and it changes depending on how the atmosphere evolves during that evening.
The best thing about my job are the moments when I see people light up on the dance floor. It brings me pleasure to see others enjoying themselves. I know I have done well when I hear the crowd screaming all the way to the DJ booth. That is rewarding.
I joined the union, because when I changed jobs, I felt I wanted to belong to my own sector's union. As a member you also get plenty of union members' benefits and you can participate in events or courses that are of your interest.
In my spare time I have the time for many hobbies. Hiking is one of my favourite things to do both in the summer and winter time. I also like to play "beanie hockey", jig and do mountain biking.
