Every vote counts
New decision-makers will soon be elected to the municipalities. Emma Merko, 24, an ABC Pitkäjärvi service station shop employee from Mikkeli, listed three reasons why young people in particular should vote in municipal elections.
1. The smooth running of everyday life depends a lot on how services are available. My family includes 2- and 4-year-old girls, a dog and a husband. As the mother of a family with children, for example, I hope that day care centres will not be merged into too big units, and I consider it important that municipal services remain in close range to employees. By using our votes, we can all influence our future.
2. The selection of a candidate is easy, for example, by the help of election machines. It is important to consider which things are important to yourself and choose a party as well as a candidate accordingly. My own father has been involved in local politics for several decades, so my first contact with the municipal elections was already years ago when I was sharing election flyers with him. Now that face-to-face meeting of candidates is not possible, the web and social media are the best tools for finding your own candidate.
3. It is important to make the voice of young people heard. It is worrying that people in my own age group have not been very interested in local elections. If many people think that their own vote is not important or relevant, then it can be many votes off from a good candidate. Everyone's vote is needed, because even one vote can be decisive!
