Finally: Foodora couriers to have break spaces
According to a courier representative, break spaces would not have been reinstated without active campaigning.
Food delivery service Foodora has decided to reopen employee break spaces in Helsinki. Foodora shut down its break rooms in the Helsinki region in autumn 2017, and it later also gave up its break space in Tampere.
A group of Foodora employees has been actively campaigning for the reinstatement of the break spaces and an increase in salaries. Foodora cut the base hourly rates for its couriers in September 2018 and renounced the mileage allowances and parking benefits for driver couriers.
“We’re convinced that we would not have been given the break rooms without active campaigning,” says Henri Siira, a senior rider captain at Foodora and member of the Justice4couriers campaign.
According to Siira, Foodora negotiated with its couriers to determine what kinds of break facilities they should have, and that the opening date for the break spaces was set to 14 February.
“We are very pleased that Foodora has been willing to accommodate its couriers in this issue. We hope that break spaces will also be made available in other cities and that we will be able to reach reconciliation on other important issues, such as the lack of insurance, sick leave and formal terms of employment,” states the release from the Justice4couriers campaign, which is advocating for the rights of the couriers.
