Get to know the trade unions – a new video series introduces Finnish working life

It’s now possible to study Finnish by watching videos with instructions and rules for working life. PAM’s new video series explains the importance of trade unions for employees with English, Arabic and Dari/Farsi subtitles.

Together with Suomitaskussa.eu, PAM has produced a five-part video series, discussing which trade union to choose, how to join a union, the services offered by unions, the importance of the employment contract as well as the role of the shop steward. The series is intended for people from an immigrant background who are currently working or about to enter employment.

Suomitaskussa.eu offers a video-based service to help immigrants study the Finnish language and culture at their own pace. Approximately half of the users of the service are immigrants. The other half includes, for example, teachers who use the videos in Finnish language courses or in integration training. To support learning, the videos feature subtitles in Arabic, Dari/Farsi and English.

“The videos are an easy way to learn Finnish”

Akram Al-Hajj learned Finnish with the help of the videos on Suomitaskussa.eu. His native language is Arabic, but he also speaks English.

“I’ve increased my Finnish vocabulary. At the same time, I’ve practiced pronunciation and word order,” he explains.

He says that the best part is that he can watch the videos whenever he wants free of charge.
“I like to study at home in my free time or during the weekends, but also on the bus or train. It’s really convenient,” says Akram.

“Finding employment is a crucial part of integration. Immigrants want to work, and they are looking for jobs in Finland. For this reason it’s good that the videos explain the rules of employment and the role of the trade unions,” he adds.

“I would absolutely recommend the service to other people from immigrant backgrounds, since it helps develop vocabulary while introducing more aspects of Finnish culture.”
