Mediation in the security guarding sector to continue on Tuesday – postponement of the strike makes the situation more difficult

“Last week, when the whole security guarding sector was on strike for three days, national security was not put at risk. Why is the situation different now, when just one company is affected?” PAM President Ann Selin wonders.

Following a proposal from the National Conciliator, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment postponed the strike planned for Tuesday at Securitas Oy and Securitas Palvelut Oy by two weeks. According to the National Conciliator, the point of postponement is to get time for mediation and to ensure national security.

PAM President Ann Selin says that the real reason for postponing the strikes is guarding of nuclear power plants.

“We were told that the strike is being postponed because of the security guarding at the Loviisa and Olkiluoto nuclear power plants that has been outsourced to Securitas Oy. We were asked to exclude these sites from the strike. We cannot understand how the security of nuclear power plants is dependent on one private security firm. Therefore we didn’t see any reason to restrict the right of security guards to participate in the strike.”

“We announced the industrial action two weeks before the date of the strike. The nuclear power plants would have had time during those two weeks to arrange security on the strike day. Postponing the strike now makes the situation in the security guarding sector even more difficult,” Selin states.

Mediation in the security guarding sector will continue at 10.30 on Tuesday 6 November. The one-day strike announced by PAM at Securitas Oy and Securitas Palvelut Oy will be postponed by two weeks, so the new strike date is from 14.00 on 20 November to 24.00 on 21 November. This postponement does not affect other industrial action announced previously.
