Pay attention to bonuses and off days during public holidays

For sales work done on a Twelfth night, a Holiday eve bonus is paid accordingly to the Collective Agreement for the Commercial Sector. Photo: GettyImages.

Sales assistants or store clerks should be attentive in regard of Holiday eve bonuses at the turn of the year, as Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve this year take place on a Sunday, and Twelfth night on a Friday.

According to the Collective Agreement for the Commercial Sector (section 12 clause 4) Holiday eve bonus is paid to sales personnel and store clerks working after 6 pm (18.00 – 24.00) in a shop, which is open on the eve before a church holiday. Holiday eve bonus is equivalent to Saturday bonus (Helsinki 5,35€ and elsewhere in Finland 5,17€ per hour).

In 2017, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve are exceptions, since these days occur on Sundays. If a sales assistant or a store clerk is working on the evenings in question, he/she should be paid
- for regular work a double wages (Sunday bonus)
- instead of Holiday eve bonus an Evening bonus for Sunday evenings in November and December (Helsinki 8,20€ and elsewhere in Finland 7,84€ per hour).

For sales work done on a Twelfth night, a Holiday eve bonus is paid accordingly to the Collective Agreement for the Commercial Sector. Holiday eve bonus is equivalent to Saturday bonus when Twelfth night takes place on Friday eve 5.1.2018.

Off days before church holidays
A worker, on a permanent agreement within the Commercial Sector, is entitled to having two evenings off out of four (Easter Saturday, Midsummer’s Eve, Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve). In case, you have not been granted these leaves, your employer will compensate you for the outstanding off days before church holidays by paying a 100% elevated wages for regular work (Collective Agreement for the Commercial Sector, section 7 clause 8.3.).
