According to the organisations, the government’s new draft proposal on opening up cross-border travel to Finland is complicated and impossible to put into practice.

PAM is party to the joint letter (in Finnish) to the government from organisations representing the tourism sector. The letter expresses the hope that safe travel to Finland can be opened up as soon as possible.

In its own statement , PAM has previously said that it is important to support the recovery of the Finnish tourism sector. The crisis in the tourism industry needs to be addressed as the future of the entire sector hangs in the balance, with significant implications for employment throughout the sector.

The organisations’ petition states that the draft law would lead to an unnecessary squandering of resources for society and taxpayers. PAM made the same point in its own statement to parliament proposing a temporary amendment of the Communicable Diseases Act.

The organisations set out their views on how travel could be made safe. Among other things, they state their position on testing passengers, guidance on for passengers on arrival, and ensuring sufficient testing capacity to prevent the disease spreading.

Thousands of jobs have already been lost in the industry due to the coronavirus epidemic, with major social implications. To ensure the industry has a viable future, the organisations call on the government to prepare a cost support III package that treats companies as equally as possible regardless of their size.

The letter is signed by the Central Chamber of Commerce, the Lapland Chamber of Commerce, the Finnish Lapland Tourist Board LME, the Finnish Hospitality Association MaRa, Service Union United PAM, Service Sector Employers PALTA and the Association of the Finnish Travel Industry SMAL.
