Towards better working conditions by collective bargaining
Jaana Ylitalo, collective bargaining director at PAM, looks to the coming collective agreement negotiations with confidence. Here she discusses four key points in the negotiations.
A joint effort. Preparations for the new collective agreement are underway throughout the agreement period, and they involve all employees and members of the union in one way or another. The collective agreement negotiations are a joint effort which culminates at the negotiation table. Even though only a few people are physically present at the negotiations, they are always backed by huge groups of supporters in spirit.
High motivation. The preparations for the forthcoming round of negotiations will be done carefully together with the membership. A shared agenda is a good foundation for the negotiation. Despite the tight coordination on the employer side, we have high motivation and considerable experience to back us up. I have always been incredibly proud of the fact that we can find creative solutions even when the situation is difficult. While this round of negotiations for collective agreements has begun in less than amicable circumstances overall, it does not mean that every agreement will be as difficult to negotiate.
Making a living. Part-time work is a very common feature of the biggest sectors in PAM. It’s hard to make a living on part-time employment. It’s unfair if service industry employees have to work several jobs just to make ends meet. The service industry will be an attractive career option if employees know that they will be able to make a living.
Quality of life. High quality of life consists of living wages, good and safe working conditions as well as a sense of control at work and at home. Many service employees cannot confidently plan their personal lives because their work shifts are unpredictable. Flexibility at work must not serve the employer alone – employees should also be able to expect flexibility when they need it. As jobs and the ways of working change, it is important that by employers provide opportunities for employees to develop their skills for the tasks of the future.
