How a strike affects unemployment security
Unemployment
If unemployment begins before a strike, the strike does not affect the payment of unemployment allowance.
Lay-off
If the lay-off notice is issued before the strike warning and the lay-off starts before the strike starts, the strike does not affect the payment of unemployment allowance.
Adjusted unemployment allowance
Recipients of adjusted unemployment allowance who are covered by a strike are not entitled to allowance for the period of the strike. They are paid strike pay if they are trade union members. Note: YTK is not a trade union, so YTK members are not paid strike pay.
Fixed-term employment contracts
If a fixed-term employment relationship ends during a strike, unemployment allowance is paid after the end of the employment relationship (subject to the waiting period).
Obligation to accept work during a strike
Workers are not required to accept work covered by a strike, lock-out or boycott. If the job centre offers this type of work, workers can refuse the work offer without losing their right to unemployment allowance.
