Earn as you learn

The Earn as you learn (Tutustu ja tienaa) summer traineeship programme aims to improve schoolgoers' chances of getting to know companies and working life, the ground rules of working life and work tasks.

 

The Earn as you learn traineeship programme is only available in sectors where an agreement has been made. Most collective agreements contain separate provisions on pay for school pupils, trainees and students etc. You can check these out here

PAM has agreed for the years 2023 and 2024 summer traineeship programme with employers' federations for the commercehotel, restaurant and leisure sectors, property services, as well as for pharmacies

If traineeship programmes are agreed for other sectors, information on them will be posted on this page. 

The commerce summer traineeship programme is only available in direct or associate member companies of the Finnish Commerce Federation, while the hotel, restaurant and leisure traineeship programme is limited to MaRa member companies and the property services sector programme to Real Estate Managers member companies.

During the ”Earn as you learn” period, companies cannot at the same time use other types of youth employment subsides like city and municipality summer job vouchers.

Commerce sector

PAM and the Finnish Commerce Federation have agreed on a schoolgoers' summer traineeship programme in the commerce sector in 2023-2024. It offers students in basic education, tenth-graders, participants in TUVA and TELMA preparatory education and high school students the opportunity of a 2-week work experience period in the commerce sector. 

When and what?

Summer traineeship contracts for a continuous two-week (10 working days) period between 1 June and 31 August.

Schoolgoers’ working days cannot be longer than 6 hours, they must be continuous and be between 8 am and 6 pm.

If a schoolgoer falls ill during a summer traineeship period, their employer can offer them the opportunity to complete the training period later. If this is not possible, the schoolgoer is still paid for the whole traineeship period.

Workplaces must agree in advance who will give schoolgoers their orientation training. Trainers must be competent and the orientation must focus especially on occupational safety and health.

What’s the pay?

In 2023-2024, the pay for completing an Earn as you learn summer traineeship programme is 395 euros. This one-off pay includes holiday compensation accrued from the period and all other monetary benefits under the collective agreement.

Hotel, restaurant and leisure industry

PAM and the Finnish Hospitality Association MaRa have agreed on a schoolgoers’ summer traineeship programme in hotel, restaurant and leisure industry companies in 2023-2024. It offers students in basic education, tenth-graders, participants in TUVA and TELMA preparatory education and high school students the opportunity of a 2-week work experience period in the commerce sector. 

When and what?

Hospitality sector Earn as you learn traineeship programme employment contract form 2023-2024

Property services sector

Real Estate Employers and Service Union United PAM have agreed on an “Earn as you learn” traineeship programme for 2023-2024. It offers students in basic education, tenth-graders, participants in TUVA and TELMA preparatory education and high school students the opportunity of a 2-week work experience period in the commerce sector. 

When and what?

Summer traineeship contracts for a continuous two-week (10 working days) period between 1 June and 31 August.

Daily working hours can be a maximum of 6 hours, they must be continuous and take place in daytime shifts between Monday and Friday. Shifts can start no earlier than 7 am, except for under-15-year-olds, whose shifts can start no earlier than 8 am. Shifts must end no later than 6 pm.

If a schoolgoer falls ill during a summer traineeship period, their employer can offer them the opportunity to complete the training period later. If this is not possible, the schoolgoer is still paid for the whole traineeship period.

The summer traineeship programme including orientation training must be drawn up in such a way that schoolgoers can do their work safely and get as comprehensive an impression as possible of the company’s activities. There must be a balance between getting to know the job and working. The orientation trainer must be appointed in advance and must be competent.

Pharmacies

PAM and the pharmacy employers’ federation have agreed on a schoolgoers’ summer traineeship programme for 2023-2024. It offers students in basic education, tenth-graders, participants in TUVA and TELMA preparatory education and high school students the opportunity of a 2-week work experience period in the commerce sector. 

When and what?

Summer traineeship contracts for a continuous two-week (10 working days) period between 1 June and 31 August.

Schoolgoers’ shifts must be continuous, a maximum of 6 hours and must take place between 8 am and 6 pm from Monday to Friday.

Trainees must get as comprehensive impression as possible of the activities of pharmacies. Orientation trainers must be given sufficient time to carry out their task.

Other points
Under the collective agreement for pharmacies, schoolgoers can be paid so-called schoolgoers’ pay. If an employee has had an Earn as you learn contract, the duration of this reduces the maximum period of payment of schoolgoers’ pay.

Schoolgoers can only have one traineeship period under the agreement in the same pharmacy in the period 1 June – 31 August.
