A dispute lasting a couple of weeks over midweek public holiday procedures at L&T that escalated into walk-outs has been resolved. “With good, pro-active cooperation the situation could perhaps have been avoided altogether”, says PAM President Annika Rönni-Sällinen.

Lassila & Tikanoja took a unilateral decision to change its procedures on midweek public holidays and announced this a couple of weeks ago. Negotiations took place between the employer and the head shop stewards, and today Wednesday the employer agreed to take into account the proposals submitted by the shop stewards on Wednesday. Now the company has promised to put things right as regards midsummer. They promise to apply their previous procedures. Before this the company did not discuss the changes with the shop stewards or even inform them.

Angry at the changes, Lassila & Tikanoja property service employees in different roles walked out on Wednesday morning.
“Under the circumstances, I am happy that the situation has calmed down. It “I am happy that the situation has calmed down. We will resume discussions on this with the employer early in the autumn”, says Erja Killström, L&T head shop steward based in Turku, about the dispute at the company over midweek public holidays.has been agreed with the employer to put things right as regards midsummer. The correction will appear in wage payments on 15 July”, says Erja Killström, head shop steward at  L&T Turku.

PAM President Annika Rönni-Sällinen considers this to be an example of what happens when a company forgets to consult the views and needs of its workers.

“It’s good that this matter was resolved. With good, pro-active cooperation the situation could perhaps have been avoided altogether. For example, local agreement requires cooperation and win-win solutions. So it’s not about quick fixes”, Rönni-Sällinen says.

In the autumn, the shop stewards at L&T plan to go through operating models and procedures in more detail with the employer.

Killström says that as a rule the shop stewards have had good lines of communication with the employer.

“I hope this good communication will continue in future and that we can negotiate things directly”, Killström says.
