Notice periods for employment contracts

Updated: 20.04.2020

The longer you have been employed somewhere, the longer the notice period is for your employment contract. The trade union (PAM) and the employers’ federation can agree notice periods in the collective agreement that are different from the so-called standard notice periods in the Employment Contracts Act.

The notice periods do not apply if an employee has a fixed-period employment contract. This is binding on both the employer and the employee; notice does not specifically have to be given for a fixed-term contract. It ends when the period stated in the employment contract ends.

The notice period also does not apply if a new employee is on a so-called trial period, or if the employee’s employment relationship is terminated.
